M42 The Orion Nebula

Description

I've recently fallen in love with nebulas. They have a special beauty that is quite hard to describe, it's not just the shape or the color, it's something else that makes them so special. They look so unreal, yet they are just as real as you and me. Some nebulae looks very strange, like if they formed some kind of object while not knowing it themselves. It's fascinating.

This wallpaper was based on a photo by Russell Croman. It's a photo of the Orion Nebula (also known as Messier object 42 or M42). It was manipulated and colored to make a great wallpaper. However I never distorted it, I wanted too keep the original shape so you can still see that it's actually the Orion nebula. Big thanks to him for letting me use his photos for this.

The Orion nebula itself is located about 1500-1600 lightyears away and is probably the most famous of all nebulae. This nebula was discovered 1610 by Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc. The Orion Nebula is also one of the easiest and most rewarding target for amateur astrophotographers.

Well, enough talking.
I hope you all like it. I will be making more of these, so keep your eyes open!
